The BroadwaySpace Prologue

When I was growing up, it took 35 minutes to drive to my small high school in Worcester, Massachusetts. And I used to blast the Les Miz Complete Symphonic Recording on my cassette deck the entire way. Can you picture me rockin? out to “Confrontation” at 6:30 AM?

But as soon as I got to campus, I used to hide the tapes in my glove compartment and put on Milli Vanilli, or whatever else was in the Top 40 that week. Once, when my best friend found my Aspects of Love tape, I told him it was my Mom's.

Every once in awhile, I was lucky enough to run into someone else who was a Falsettos fan, someone else who knew who Mandy Patinkin was, or someone else who thought Daisy Eagan’s acceptance speech for her Secret Garden Tony Award was the coolest thing ever. It was usually when I was doing a show. But, as we all know, shows come and go, and then you end up back in your room, listening to Phantom and framing your Broadway playbills by yourself.

So flash forward a few light years, and now I work in the theater! And I live a few blocks from Broadway! And cassettes have gone the way of the 8-Track! Yet I still find myself hiding my "musicals" playlists on my iPod from people.

And then one day I thought . . . what if there was a place where all of the people just like me hung out all the time? What if there was a place where it always felt like you were doing a show, and it never closed? What if there was a place that made you feel like you were living in the heart of Times Square, even though you might be living in Worcester, Massachusetts?

So, I got together with my great friend and my tech guru, Cedric Yau (who got a masters in Computer Science at 20), and we created BroadwaySpace.com

So join up! Post photos and videos from your own shows, blog about Broadway, publicize your local theater company, create groups for your local drama clubs and post rehearsal schedules & audition notices, message your favorite actors, schedule meet ups . . . and yes, blast Les Miz as loud as you want. But I get to be Javert.

Have a blast and we’ll see you on your "stage".

Best,
Ken Davenport
